Fighting diseases of poverty

Guides, Scouts and groups: join the ‘Jar of Hope’ appeal

These girls have been listening to a LEPRA health talk to help protect them from diseases of poverty like leprosy
An old jam jar is converted into a Jar of Hope for LEPRA

Many people are surprised to hear that even today one person is diagnosed with leprosy every two minutes. One in ten people diagnosed with leprosy is a child. To help children like these LEPRA Health in Action is asking Guides, Scouts and Brownies to support the Jar of Hope appeal.

LEPRA Health in Action is asking Guides, Scouts and Brownies to join our Jar of Hope Appeal to support our work transforming lives in India, home to more than half the world’s leprosy cases.

Left untreated leprosy results in nerve damage, affecting movement and sensation in the hands, feet and eyes.

For some of the children already affected by leprosy your help may mean the restoration of sight, for others the use again of hands and feet. Others, diagnosed early will be prevented from disability, for them all it will be the gift of health and a more secure future.

The Jar of Hope allows children to undertake tasks for modest rewards and collect small donations from family and friends. This simple, easily managed fundraising initiative will ensure that they can play a crucial role in transforming the lives of children affected by leprosy.  All those who take part will receive a LEPRA badge – ideal for camp blankets!

Toby used his jar to raise over £100 for LEPRA.
