Madagascar

Madagascar is the eighth poorest country in the world and the fourth largest island. It lies to the south east of Africa, in the Indian Ocean. Chronic malnutrition and lack of infrastructure for health and education are very common. In addition many of the villages can be cut off for months by heavy rains accompanying the cyclone season from November to April. 61% of the population live on less than $1 per day.
Fighting leprosy in Madagascar
Leprosy is still a serious public health concern in Madagascar. The remoteness of the villages presents a problem with conducting Leprosy Elimination Campaigns, as some villages can only be reached by plane followed by arduous motorbike journeys on rough roads. Altogether it is a particularly difficult environment, both physically and culturally. LEPRA Health in Action supports the work of the Fondation Raoul Follereau in Madagascar.
