Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world with 66% of its population living below the poverty line. The majority of its 13 million population live in rural areas where health facilities are mostly inaccessible because of the distance involved and lack of reliable and affordable transport.

Only 57% of the population has access to safe water, and only 76% benefit from adequate sanitation. Among the biggest challenges faced by the health sector is the lack of qualified health personnel: there are fewer than 200 doctors in the whole of Malawi (approximately one doctor to every 65,000 people) compared to 124,500 in UK (one doctor to every 490 people).

LEPRA Health in Action provided supported to the Malawi National Leprosy and Skin Programme until early 2011.

During 2009-10 LEPRA established a project to train community-based volunteers in disability management in Lymphatic Filariasis and Leprosy, in the district of Chikwawa.
