Mozambique is a coastal country located in South-East Africa. Poverty is widespread with over half the population living on less than US$1 per day. HIV/AIDS is a serious public health issue: its high prevalence rate has an impact on many other indicators such as life expectancy and infant mortality.

Leprosy in Mozambique

LEPRA Health in Action provided support to the national leprosy programme in Mozambique until early 2011. Support was given through the training of health workers, health education and community awareness raising, activities to prevent disabilities as well as construction and rehabilitation of laboratories and inpatient wards.

TB and HIV/AIDS in Mozambique

In 2003, 54% of Mozambique’s population was living below the poverty line. The HIV/AIDS epidemic is expanding, life expectancy was estimated at 45 years in 2003 and it is expected to drop to 38 years in 2010. LEPRA Health in Action supported the national TB programme and works to prevent the spread of HIV.
