LEPRA Health in Action is a medical development charity with a long history of restoring health, hope and dignity to people affected by leprosy and other diseases of poverty.

We focus our work on the regions of greatest need in India and Bangladesh, where a single state can be larger and have a greater population density than many whole countries.

For example, the state of Bihar in Eastern India has a population 1.5 times that of the entire UK, 81% of it’s population are defined by the United Nations Development Programme as living in poverty, 85% have no permanent electrical supply and only 17% have access to sanitation facilities. The average distance people in Bihar have to travel for medical help is 62 miles! The health services supplied by our local teams working closely with the most disadvantaged people are therefore essential.

As a charity, our work has and will continue to be reliant on the support of the British public, until diseases like leprosy, lymphatic filariasis, malaria,  tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and the poverty that fuels them are a thing of the past.
