Fighting diseases of poverty

Cycling in India overseas charity challenge

Jane Langdon on the 2011 LEPRA India bike ride with fellow cyclist Nicky

Interested in cycling in India or an overseas charity challenge and wondering what this will involve?

Jane Langdon, 59 who is from Buckley has returned from number 13 of her overseas bike rides for LEPRA on which she has to date managed to raise over £30,000. This trip saw Jane cycling in India despite having recently overcome a serious illness!

Jane who is retired, spent two weeks in India following the work of LEPRA staff and volunteers as part of a bike ride group of 19 people raising more than £40,000.

LEPRA’s annual India bike ride, made up of people like Jane takes place every January in India to fund our work fighting diseases of poverty.

According to Jane whose daughter is a nurse, “Before I was due to go out I came down with swine flu. Our health systems are so good in this country, I knew what it was from all the public health information that the NHS put out about it. It made me appreciate how vital this is. It made seeing the work that LEPRA is doing in helping vulnerable people in India protect themselves against public health problems like TB as well as diseases like leprosy so much more meaningful.”

Jane also expressed her thanks to members of the LEPRA bike ride crew whose support extended to riding her bike up some of the steeper climbs!

Together with a LEPRA health education van the cyclists on the India bike ride travel over 500km through the states of Andhra Pradesh and Orissa in India. As well as taking in breath-taking scenery and great food cooked by the LEPRA cook along the way, as a participant you get the chance to:

  • visit LEPRA clinics and villages along the route
  • gain a unique insight into LEPRA’s work
  • meet local people
  • see what the money you are raising is helping to fund
  • support us in awareness raising in local communities
  • and wider; drawing a lot of media attention.

Now that she is home in Cheshire Jane is looking forward to speaking to more people about her experience.

Please contact Lizzie/Karen for an informal chat if like Jane you would like to take part in our India Bike Ride or would like to know more about cycling in India.
