Mapping leprosy in Brazil
LEPRA Health in Action is supporting the use of GPS (Global Positioning System) technology to map out leprosy cases at a municipal level in endemic areas. This has helped to identify the areas with high concentrations of people affected by leprosy and to concentrate resources and efforts where these are needed most.
The municipality of Caninde, where GPS mapping was supported in 2007, has seen an increase in detection as a result. It has therefore been necessary to extend LEPRA’s work on prevention and management of disability in leprosy patients to improve their lives.
