Advocacy for equality

LEPRA Health in Action continues to support to the MORHAN project in Ceara state, Brazil. MORHAN, the Movement for Rehabilitation of  People Affected by Leprosy, has been supported by LEPRA for several years as it battles for equal and fair treatment of people affected by leprosy (or Hansens Disease as it is known in Brazil).

As part of MORHAN’s activities, communities are informed about leprosy and encouraged to campaign for their right to access health services. Information about leprosy is distributed in schools and other public places with the aim of reducing the stigma and discrimination faced by those affected by the disease. The video clip on the right (in Portuguese) shows MORHAN in action.

During 2008, with support from LEPRA MORHAN successfully set up a Social Ombudsman to act as a channel for community concerns on discrimination. The result is an independednt body to which people affected by leprosy and other health conditions can turn to report any violation of their rights or experiences of discrimination.

Please donate now to support this work. We rely on the help of people like you to make sure we can continue with our important programmes here and around the world.
