Mr Demontier – Shoemaker

Mr Demontier is a former leprosy patient and a shoemaker in Juazeiro do Norte, Brazil. He shows us one of the 188 pairs of shoes suitable for anaesthetic feet produced in his workshop in 2008.
‘LEPRA taught me how to adapt my skills and provided the equipment I needed to produce these bespoke shoes. There is no shortage of demand but what I need is commitment from the municipal health authority to cover my costs so that I can make a living.’
‘LEPRA supports the government leprosy programme in four states of the poorest region of Brazil: Rio Grande do Norte; Alagoas; Paraíba; and Ceará. Our work continues in supporting advocacy work of local groups to influence local government policy to ensure equal and fair treatment for leprosy affected people.’
