Stigma reduction in Agua De Dios, Colombia

The municipality of Agua de Dios in Colombia is an ex-colony, today stigmatised as a leprosarium with limited economic stimulation. Prejudice, stigma and discrimination systematically associated with leprosy and the inhabitants of Agua de Dios prevent economic growth and constrain opportunities for its population both inside and outside of the municipality.
The lack of knowledge and awareness about leprosy has resulted in high levels of stigma and negative perceptions of Agua de Dios and its inhabitants. Awareness-raising campaigns among health professionals, local authorities and students inform them about the disease. The general population is also informed through quarterly Newsletters, radio slots and via the internet.
